North Florida Land Trust to receive challenge grant from Delores Barr Weaver Fund for Bogey Creek Preserve

Bogey Creek Landing | North Florida Land Trust Jacksonville FL

Jacksonville, Fla., Aug. 24, 2017 – North Florida Land Trust is pleased to announce they have received a challenge grant of up to $125,000 from the Delores Barr Weaver Fund at The Community Foundation of Northeast Florida for the purchase of the Bogey Creek Preserve. The money will go toward the $1.2 million needed to acquire the 85 acres of land and the $105,000 needed to cover the due diligence, land management and improvements to create a public park.

“This land is more than a mile of critical marsh front in the Timucuan Preserve and acquiring it means we can protect it and enjoy it forever,” said Jim McCarthy, president of NFLT. “Our mission to obtain this piece of property began back in 2006 when we received six and one-half acres from the Spencer family. With the purchase of the remaining 79 acres, we are able to save the land from development and create a place for everyone to enjoy the natural character of the land for years to come.”

The property is located on Clapboard and Bogey Creeks, neighboring Pumpkin Hill Creek Preserve State Park and the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. It is a matrix of maritime hammock forest, seep-fed cypress swamps and mixed pine-oak forest. NFLT plans to create a public preserve which they will manage and maintain into perpetuity. They will create parking access on Sheffield Road, two miles of public walking trails with a footbridge and wildlife overlooks, a picnic area, two kayak launches and signage throughout explaining the ecosystem and unique portions of the property.

In addition to the challenge grant, NFLT has received a pledge of $500,000 from River Branch Foundation. Those interested in donating to help with the acquisition of Bogey Creek Preserve should send their donation marked for Bogey Creek to NFLT, 2038 Gilmore St., Jacksonville, FL 32204 or donate online at www.northfloridalandtrust.org.
